Jacket from a sheath dress

Photos MM       I found a sheath dress from the early 1970's. Then I found another, just similar. Because I liked the fabrics, I bought another one. However, you can't wear two sheath dresses at the same time. So I took my scissors and pattern for sleeves and did it...    The red fabric was a tablecloth before. New life for her also.

A skirt and a jacket from a dress

Photos Margit Mannila   I finished a half skirt and a jacket made from a dress. I bought the dress from a recycling center and there were also fabrics that usually cost 3 €/bag. The black fabric that is in the jacket is fabric that came from just such a bag.   You can choose the fabrics yourself.     The checked fabric is made by Annala weaving mill in Lapua. I bought it at their clearance sale in July 2025.     I left the buttons on the front of the half skirt and only one button was enough for the jacket. I made the rest of the buttons from the fabrics I used and the cutting waste.

Jacket and skirt from used jeans

Photo by TW (colleague)   This was a really tough job overall. Especially sewing the buttons on the jacket took time, even though I did it entirely by  sewing machine. And then I got inspired to make decorative things like that. I sewed gold thread by hand, etc. I also got inspired to buy a tie from a flea market, from which I cut out some patterns,  and sewed them onto the jacket. The plan is that I will also make a bag and a shirt. Well, they haven't even started yet, so it will be a long time before they see the light of day.  I am happy with this jacket and skirt. I' d love to use this skirt pattern again. Maybe for quilt work.   Skirt from Burda Style 6/2025, MD 108 - working hours about 80-90 hours. Jacket Burda Style 6/2025, MD 124 - working hours about 100-160 hours.   What do you think about?     Edit 17.3.2026     Yle published an article about making clothes from recycling textiles. Title of article is Yli 50 ...

Clothes are said to be part of ones personality

Clothes are said to be part of ones personality. True or not, who knows? When I do choose my clothes, I usually prefer classy clothes. I do like them and feel that they are part of me. I pay more attention to my jackets, skirts, and pants than to shirts and pullovers. That's because I have to change my shirts and pullovers more often than my jackets or trousers, or skirts. Shirts have to be changed quite often, so they can be cheaper than jackets. I have used many years. Sometimes my dear cat destroys part of my clothes. Her nails are quite sharp, and she loves scratching. You know that if you do have any. Don't worry about broken clothes. You can use Japanese thinking, which they fixing broken glass or porcelain (kintsugi or kintsukoroi). I use the same philosophy for my broken clothing. I do not try to fix it invisibly, but I do it as art. Or what do you think skirt I made from old jeans?      Burda style 6/2025 MD 108
